Paka

A returnable packaging solution for fresh food in municipal markets.

Simple. Accessible. Transformative.

How does it work?

You go to the market, shop at your usual stalls, and take your products in a returnable container instead of a single-use one.

All you need to do is download the app, show your user QR code to identify yourself at the shop, and use it for free. You have 15 days to return the containers to the market’s drop box. There’s no need to wash them — we’ll take care of that to ensure proper hygiene.

1
Order food with PAKA at your favorite stall.
2
Identify yourself with your user QR code at the time of payment.
3
Take PAKA home for free and without generating waste.
4
Return PAKA to the nearest drop box within 15 days.
5
Insert the lid first, then the container.

The project

With Paka, we designed a local solution to address a global problem. Thanks to our reuse ecosystem, we’re making the way we eat more sustainable.

This has been our journey so far:

2022 2022

We designed the circular economy proposal with the support of the Generalitat.

The Carmel community volunteered to try it out, and sustainable food became part of their daily routine. In this proof of concept, 80% of the containers were successfully returned.

2023 2023

We went out to consult with the neighbors of Mercat de la Llibertat, Mercat de la Concepció, and Mercat de Sants.

Based on their responses, we developed an empathetic design rooted in the habits of local communities.

A creative human team took shape, building the PAKA ecosystem — packaging, protocols, communication, awareness and educational campaigns, technology, collection drop boxes, and more.

2024 2024

We put the ecosystem to the test and are ready to spark a change in the way we eat. The goal: to eliminate waste and preserve what truly matters.

The network

To achieve a more sustainable consumption model, collaboration between the public sector, merchants, and citizens is essential. In fact, the involvement of the following has been key so far:
